Lasik which is Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis

This corrective procedure is meant to improve refractive errors of the eye such as farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism. What the physician does is remove the flap from the middle and outer layer of the eye and then uses a precise laser to remove tissue from under the flap.

The side effect that is most common is dry eyes but it usually only last for 3 to 6 months.  You should also know that it can be easily treated with medicated eye drops.  The more rare side effects that have been known to happen are halos or glares and night.  Though this is much less common today as they are improving lasik surgery every day.

Lasek which is Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis

Lasek is a procedure very common to the Lasik procedure.  the only difference is that they only cut and use the outer flap and layer of the eye or the epithelium. it is usually only suggested for people that cannot have the lasik procedure done and has a longer heaqling period.  So it is not nearly as common as Lasik eye surgery.

Prk or Photorefractive Keratectomy

This procedure is aimed to mainly correct vision for astigmatism and nearsightedness but also correctly mild cases of farsightedness.  The steps that are done is using a laser to remove the outer layer of the cornea and remove tissue to correct the problems named above.  The difference with this procedure is that the doctor does not cut the flap from the cornea. Instead the skin layer lacated over the cornea is scraped by the physician manually and therfore requires a longer recovery time but is said to be less risky.

IntraLense

Intralense differs from the other surgeries because the doctor uses an extra laser to create the flap in the outer layer of the eye instead of cutting it with a blade.

How long does the surgery last and how fast do you recover?

The actual eye surgery usually only lasts about a minute but you are in the surgery room for 15-25 minutes.  The different procedures have different lengths of recover time.

With Lasik the patients can start there daily routines after 24 hours and have complete use of there eye after 1 day. With PRK recovery times can range from a few days to a few weeks.
